Old Newgate Prison

Located in East Granby, Connecticut, Old Newgate Prison is a harrowing 18th-century penal site built directly atop America's first chartered copper mine. Established in 1773, it served as Connecticut's primary colonial jail and later as a brutal Revolutionary War prisoner-of-war camp where Tory Loyalists were housed in damp, pitch-black subterranean caverns.
