    Chilpyk Dakhma

    KarauzyakUzbekistan1st Century BCE

Chilpyk Dakhma, also known as the Tower of Silence, is a striking two-thousand-year-old Zoroastrian funeral ring perched atop a isolated conical hill overlooking the Amu Darya River in Karakalpakstan. Constructed between the first century BCE and the first century CE, Chilpyk served for centuries as an open-air excarnation site where the dead were exposed to scavengers and elements according to Zoroastrian ritual purity laws. As the national emblem symbol of Karakalpakstan, Chilpyk is steeped in ancient desert lore. Visitors and local shepherds report shadowy robed figures along the perimeter rim, disembodied chanting in the wind, and eerie glowing lights above the ancient exposure platform.
