    Built in the 2nd century CE under Roman Emperor Trajan, the Durrës Amphitheatre is the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkan Peninsula, once holding 20,000 spectators for brutal gladiatorial combats. Later housing an early Christian chapel decorated with rare wall mosaics, its subterranean barrel-vaulted tunnels are famed for phantom gladiatorial echoes, strange cold drafts, and shadowy figures.
