Gjirokastër Castle
Dominating the stone city of Gjirokastër from a high mountain ridge, Gjirokastër Castle is one of the largest fortresses in the Balkans. Famed for the tragic legend of Princess Argjiro who leapt to her death with her infant child to escape Ottoman capture, the castle also served as a dark political prison during King Zog's reign and the communist regime, giving rise to persistent accounts of marching footsteps and phantom weeping in its subterranean vaults.
