Cave of Cervantes (Grotte de Cervantes)

    Belouizdad / AlgiersAlgeria16th Century

Nestled into a steep forested hillside in the Belouizdad district of Algiers, the Cave of Cervantes (Grotte de Cervantes) is a historical subterranean site where Miguel de Cervantes, author of 'Don Quixote', hid during a daring escape attempt in 1577 while held as a captive in corsair Algiers. Hidden for over six months inside this dark, damp cavern with fourteen fellow Spanish prisoners, Cervantes was eventually betrayed just as a rescue frigate approached. Today, the cave is revered as a literary monument, but local visitors and nocturnal hikers report haunting encounters, including low whispered conversations in archaic Spanish, phantom light flickers, and an oppressive feeling of claustrophobic anxiety.
