Timgad Ancient Roman City
Known as the 'Pompeii of Africa', Timgad (ancient Thamugadi) is a exceptionally preserved Roman grid city founded in 100 CE by Emperor Trajan in the Aurès Mountains. Renowned for its magnificent Arch of Trajan, 3,500-seat theater, grand library, public baths, and paved colonnaded avenues, Timgad survived Vandal invasions, Berber raids, and Byzantine re-fortifications before being abandoned to Saharan sands in the 8th century. Local Berber traditions and nocturnal site guardians report ghost sightings of Roman legionaries, distant sounds of theatrical performances, phantom footsteps echoing along the Decumanus Maximus, and ancient curses surrounding the subterranean tomb crypts.
