    Fort São José de Encoje

    Fort São José de Encoje (Forte de Encoje) is an isolated 18th-century Portuguese military outpost nestled in the dense tropical forests of Uíge Province. Built in 1759 under Governor António Vasconcelos to secure the frontier between the kingdoms of Ndongo and Kongo, the fort saw brutal skirmishes, slave raids, and tropical disease outbreaks before being reclaimed by the jungle. Today, its overgrown stone ruins are famous for stories of a vanishing garrison, phantom bugle calls, and ancestral spirits.
