Royal Complex of M'banza Kongo
M'banza Kongo, located on a high plateau in Zaire Province, was the political, spiritual, and royal capital of the Kingdom of Kongo from the 14th to the 19th centuries. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, the royal complex includes the ruins of the 16th-century Cathedral of São Salvador (Kulumbimbi), the royal residence (Lumbu), and sacred ancestral burial grounds. The site is legendary for phantom royal processions, disembodied drumming, and ancestral spirit guardians.
