Sandy Ground Salt Pond & Pump House

    Sandy GroundAnguilla17th–19th century

Stretching across the coastal basin behind Road Bay at Sandy Ground, the Road Salt Pond was once the economic heartbeat of Anguilla, known historically as 'White Gold.' For over three centuries, salt extraction provided the island's primary export, harvested by hand under punishing tropical heat by generations of enslaved and free workers. The historic Pump House, constructed in the early 20th century to regulate seawater flow into the evaporation pans, still stands on the edge of the pond. Today, while the salt industry has faded into history, the saline flat remains shrouded in local lore, with residents reporting phantom lights hovering over the water, the rhythmic splashing of unseen salt rakers, and ghostly figures hauling heavy baskets along the old embankment.
