Old Sugar Factory Ruins at Rendezvous Bay

    West EndAnguilla18th century

Situated along the scenic southwestern coastline near the powdery white sands of Rendezvous Bay, the Old Sugar Factory Ruins represent the surviving architectural footprint of an 18th-century sugar boiling house and rum distillery estate. Constructed during an ambitious attempt to establish profitable sugar cane agriculture on Anguilla's drought-prone terrain, the estate relied heavily on enslaved laborers who worked the boiling coppers and crushing mills under perilous conditions. Today, the weathered stone walls and copper kettle foundations stand near modern resort properties. Local beachgoers and resort workers frequently speak of phantom smoke rising from long-cold boiling hearths, eerie lantern lights pacing the palm groves, and disembodied footsteps along the coastal path.
