Akhtala Monastery
Perched on a high rocky peninsula enclosed by the deep gorges of the Shamlugh River in Lori Province, Akhtala Monastery — historically known as Pghindzavank ('Coppermine Monastery') — is a 10th-century fortified monastic complex. Unique among Armenian churches for its brilliant Chalcedonian-style frescoes covering the interior walls, Akhtala was built inside a high-walled fortress that guarded the northern marches of Armenia. Local legends recount secret subterranean treasure vaults, ghost defenders who haunt the copper mines beneath the citadel, and spectral light displays inside the ancient altar room.
