Amberd Fortress
Perched at an elevation of 2,300 metres on the triangular promontory formed by the Arkashen and Amberd rivers, Amberd Fortress — whose name means 'Fortress in the Clouds' in Armenian — stands as one of Armenia's most dramatic medieval strongholds. Built in the 10th century by the noble Pahlavuni family, the stone citadel survived brutal sieges by Seljuk Turks and Mongol invaders. Local legends speak of phantom medieval sentries guarding the treacherous cliffs, disembodied echoes of clashing steel during stormy alpine nights, and secret subterranean escape tunnels haunted by fallen defenders.
