    Garni Temple

    Standing proudly on a high triangular plateau surrounded by the sheer basalt cliffs of the Azat River Gorge, Garni Temple is the only surviving Greco-Roman colonnaded temple in the entire South Caucasus and former Soviet Union. Built in the 1st century CE by King Tiridates I and dedicated to Mihr, the ancient Armenian god of the sun and light, Garni served as the royal summer residence of Armenian monarchs for centuries. Renowned for surviving the Christianization of Armenia and being rebuilt after a catastrophic 1679 earthquake, the temple complex is steeped in pagan mystery, solar worship rituals, and ghost stories of ancient royal spirits roaming the bathhouse ruins.
