Carahunge (Zorats Karer)
Stretching across a high wind-swept basalt plateau near the town of Sisian in Syunik Province, Carahunge — also known as Zorats Karer ('Stone Soldiers') or the 'Armenian Stonehenge' — is a prehistoric megalithic monument predating England's Stonehenge by millennia. Comprising over 223 massive upright basalt megaliths weighing up to 10 tons, many of which feature smooth circular holes bored through their upper edges, Carahunge is believed to have functioned as an ancient astronomical observatory and sacred burial sanctuary. Known for eerie acoustic phenomena when mountain winds blow through the bored stone holes, Carahunge is rich in legends of giant stone warriors, sky gods, and glowing portal apparitions.
