Tatev Monastery
Perched dramatically on the brink of a sheer 850-metre basalt gorge carved by the Vorotan River, Tatev Monastery is a 9th-century masterpiece of Armenian architecture located in Syunik Province. Serving for centuries as a major intellectual powerhouse, spiritual seat, and fortified bastion, Tatev hosted the renowned medieval University of Tatev. The monastery is famed for its mysterious 'Gavazan' — an 8-metre swinging octagonal stone column engineered to detect seismic tremors and marching armies — and persistent folklore surrounding fallen monks, phantom bells, and aerial apparitions that haunt the gorge.
