    Vorotnavank Monastery

    VaghatinArmenia10th–11th century

Perched on a high basalt ridge overlooking the dramatic Vorotan River Gorge in Syunik Province, Vorotnavank is a historic 10th-century monastic complex founded by Queen Shahandukht of Syunik. Fortified with high stone perimeter walls to resist foreign invasions, Vorotnavank served as a vital spiritual and educational hub that produced renowned medieval theologians and manuscripts. The monastery was repeatedly raided by Seljuk and Mongol armies and suffered severe earthquake damage. Local lore tells of a phantom white-robed queen seen weeping near the altar ruins, disembodied monastic chants rising from the gorge, and sacred healing stones that emit mysterious warm glow at night.
