Mardakan Quadrangular Castle
The Quadrangular Castle of Mardakan is an extraordinarily preserved 12th-century stone keep located in the coastal settlement of Mardakan near Baku. Built by Shirvanshah Akhsitan I in 1187 AD to celebrate a historic victory over naval raiders, the five-storey tower stands 22 metres tall within a fortified stone courtyard. Steeped in medieval warfare, execution folklore, and dark oral traditions, the tower is haunted by reports of disembodied cries, phantom footsteps on its spiral stairs, and shadowy figures pacing its high battlements.
