    Chalan Beel

    Chalan Beel is one of the largest and most ecologically significant inland wetland complexes in Bangladesh, sprawling across parts of Natore, Pabna, Sirajganj, and Bogura districts. Formed historically when the Jamuna and Padma river courses shifted, this vast marshland expands into a sea of water during the monsoon season. For centuries, villagers and night boatmen have told unsettling tales of 'Aleya'—ghostly ignis fatuus fireballs hovering over the reed beds—along with phantom fishing boats, disembodied water laughter, and water spirits known in Bengali folklore as 'Jokh' or 'Mechho Bhoot'.
