    Počitelj Citadel & Historic Town

    ČapljinaBosnia and Herzegovina14th–18th century

Cascading down an amphitheater-like karst cliff overlooking the emerald Neretva River, Počitelj is a stunning medieval and Ottoman stone fortress town. Built in 1383 by King Tvrtko I of Bosnia and fortified by Hungarian and Ottoman rulers, this open-air museum features the prominent Gavrankapetanović tower, stone clock tower (Sahat-kula), and Hajji Ali Mosque. Spared total modern re-development, Počitelj's silent cobblestone alleys, abandoned stone mansions, and high watchtowers are steeped in tales of medieval sieges, pirate raids, and nighttime apparitions.
