Kastel Fortress
Occupying a central riverbank position where the Crkvena stream flows into the emerald Vrbas River in Banja Luka, Kastel Fortress is one of the oldest military strongholds in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Spanning nearly two millennia of continuous human occupation, the sprawling stone complex contains Roman foundations (Castra), medieval defense walls, and extensive 17th-century Ottoman bastions. Steeped in tragic local legends of the star-crossed lovers Safikada and her military officer, Kastel is renowned as both a vibrant cultural park and a site of haunting romantic legends.
