Blagaj Tekke & Old Town Fortress
Nestled at the base of a towering 200-meter sheer karst cliff beside the rushing, turquoise spring of the Buna River near Mostar, the Blagaj Tekke (Dervish Monastery) is a world-famous spiritual and architectural marvel. Built in the late 15th century for Sufi dervish orders, the wooden and stone monastery sits beneath the ancient ruins of Stjepan-grad (Blagaj Fortress). Long considered a sacred nexus of Islamic mysticism, dervish rituals, and ancient Herzegovinian lore, Blagaj is steeped in legends of saintly guardians, phantom dervishes, and supernatural spring spirits.
