Bobovac Royal Fortress
Perched on a narrow, isolated mountain ridge surrounded by dense pine forests between Vareš and Kakanj, Bobovac was the impregnable royal seat and crown stronghold of the medieval Kotromanić Kings of Bosnia. Housing the royal palace, court chapel, and the crown jewels of Bosnia, Bobovac fell in 1463 during the Ottoman conquest under Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror. Today, the remote, mist-shrouded ruins are steeped in tragic legends of Queen Katarina, betrayed treasures, lost royal souls, and lingering supernatural phenomena.
