Gishora Drum Sanctuary
Established on Gishora Hill by King Mwezi IV Gisabo in the late nineteenth century, the Gishora Drum Sanctuary stands as a paramount symbol of Burundian monarchical heritage, royal authority, and ancestral spiritual tradition. Built to honor loyal royal drum keepers who defended the sovereign during a dangerous political rebellion led by a rival chief, the sanctuary compound houses two sacred historical drums named Ruciteme and Murimirwa. Local legends recount that these ceremonial instruments possess spiritual awareness and divine energy, while caretakers, guards, and night travelers report hearing mysterious night-time drumming echoing across the quiet hilltop when no human musicians are present.
