Koh Ker Pyramid & Prasat Prang

    Kuleng DistrictCambodia928 CE

Deep within the dense jungle of Preah Vihear Province stands Koh Ker, a remote tenth-century capital of the Khmer Empire. Dominated by Prasat Prang—a colossal seven-tiered, 36-meter-tall sandstone step pyramid—Koh Ker served as the imperial seat of usurper King Jayavarman IV from 928 to 944 CE. Shrouded in centuries of forest isolation and wartime landmines, the pyramid is infamous in Khmer folklore for its subterranean sacrificial shaft, royal curses, and demon spirits.
