    Ta Prohm Temple

    Siem ReapCambodia1186 CE

Ta Prohm is one of the most famous and visually atmospheric temples within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Angkor. Built in 1186 CE by King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery dedicated to his mother, the temple was intentionally left largely as it was found—choked by massive silk-cotton and strangler fig trees whose colossal roots strangle ancient stone galleries. Steeped in centuries of forest isolation, Ta Prohm is famous for stories of phantom royal dancers, guardian spirits, and mysterious whispering stone corridors.
