Independence Hotel Sihanoukville
Perched atop a jungle promontory overlooking the Gulf of Thailand, the Independence Hotel in Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s oldest luxury beach resort. Designed by French architects in 1964 as a symbol of mid-century royal modernization, it was captured by the Khmer Rouge in 1975 and used as an execution site and military garrison. Renowned for its mid-century modernist architecture, the hotel is equally famous for reports of phantom guests strolling its breezy corridors and ghostly French lounge music.
