Lake Monoun
Lake Monoun is a volcanic crater lake located near Foumbot in western Cameroon, infamous as the site of a deadly limnic eruption on August 15, 1984, which released a lethal cloud of carbon dioxide that killed thirty-seven people. Long treated with quiet reverence by the neighboring Bamoun people, the crater lake was historically viewed as a domain of volatile water spirits. Today, the quiet lake shore remains associated with mysterious mists, phantom lights, and tragic historical memories.
