Lake Nyos
Lake Nyos is a volcanic crater lake in northwestern Cameroon famous worldwide for the catastrophic 1986 limnic eruption that released a silent cloud of carbon dioxide, taking over seventeen hundred human lives instantly. Long before modern science explained the volcanic phenomenon, local Kom and Aghem oral traditions treated the body of water as a cursed abode of angry water spirits. Today the silent red-tinged waters and surrounding ghost villages remain shrouded in chilling phantom sightings and persistent local superstitions.
