    Gibraltar Point Lighthouse

    TorontoCanada1808

Standing quietly among the trees on Centre Island in the Toronto Islands, Gibraltar Point Lighthouse is the oldest surviving landmark in Toronto and the oldest operational stone lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Built in 1808 to guide British naval vessels and merchant ships into York Harbor, the beacon is immortalized in local Canadian history as the scene of an unsolved murder. On January 2, 1815, the lighthouse's first keeper, J.P. Rademuller, mysteriously vanished after an altercation with British soldiers seeking contraband bootleg beer. His gruesome murder and hidden remains sparked over two centuries of ghostly sightings, making Gibraltar Point Lighthouse Toronto's most famous and enduring ghost story.
