Craigdarroch Castle
Perched on a high hill overlooking the city of Victoria, Craigdarroch Castle is a monumental Victorian Bonanza Castle built by Scottish coal baron Robert Dunsmuir. Completed in 1890, the 39-room mansion serves as a symbol of Gilded Age wealth and family strife. Robert Dunsmuir died seventeen months before the castle was finished, and subsequent decades saw bitter family inheritance lawsuits, financial loss, and multiple adaptive reuses of the estate. Visitors and staff frequently witness spectral figures, disembodied organ music, and phantom aromas of burning tobacco, making Craigdarroch Castle one of British Columbia's premier historic haunted sites.
