Aouzou Strip Outposts
Stretching across 114,000 square kilometers along Chad's far northern border with Libya, the desolate Aouzou Strip was the contested flashpoint of the fiercely fought Chadian-Libyan Conflict and Toyota War during the 1970s and 1980s. Bombarded by airstrikes and heavy artillery, ruined military outposts and burnt-out armored vehicles lie scattered across the shifting sand dunes. Local Toubou border guards describe intense hauntings, reporting spectral columns of soldiers marching through sandstorms, phantom engine revs in empty valleys, and disembodied radio transmissions crackling across dead frequencies.
