Emi Koussi Volcano
Rising 3,447 meters above the surrounding Saharan plains, Emi Koussi is a massive pyroclastic shield volcano and the highest peak in the Sahara Desert. Spanning sixty kilometers across with two nested volcanic calderas at its summit, this colossal mountain is regarded by indigenous Toubou populations as the spiritual throne of the Saharan high country. Nomads recount ancient encounters with mountain djinn, phantom fires blazing along the summit ridge, and ghostly chants echoing through high lava tubes during clear desert nights.
