Gaoui Palace & Sao Ruins
Located just ten kilometers northeast of Chad's capital city, the historic village of Gaoui is celebrated as the legendary final stronghold of the ancient Sao civilization. Renowned for their extraordinary physical size in local folklore, the Sao built massive earthen walled settlements before vanishing mysteriously. Today, Gaoui's nineteenth-century Sultan's Palace and surrounding archaeological mounds host an iconic museum displaying giant terracotta urns and artifacts, where local residents report supernatural voices and phantom giant footprints appearing in the dust after dark.
