Mount Karthala Volcano & Crater
Mount Karthala, an active shield volcano dominating the southern half of Grande Comore island, rises 2,361 meters above the Indian Ocean and holds one of the world's largest caldera craters. According to Comorian creation mythology, the volcano was spawned when a powerful jinni dropped a glowing magical gemstone, unleashing a fiery inferno that formed the island. Renowned for frequent eruptions, dense cloud forests, and steaming caldera vents, the mountain is widely believed to be the domain of fire spirits and ancient ancestral jinn.
