    Citadel of Mutsamudu

    MutsamuduComoros1782–1789

The Citadel of Mutsamudu, looming over the historic port town of Mutsamudu on Anjouan island, was constructed in the late 18th century by Sultan Abdallah I to defend the kingdom against Malagasy slave raids. Built with massive coral-stone walls, underground dungeons, and British-supplied cannons, the fortress survived intense naval bombardments and sieges. Today, the fortress is famous for ghost sightings of 18th-century sentinels, echoing footsteps in dark subterranean cells, and phantom cannon fire heard during stormy nights.

Old Medina & Dungeons of Mutsamudu

    MutsamuduComoros15th–19th Century

The Old Medina of Mutsamudu sits at the base of Citadel Hill on Anjouan island. It is a maze-like 15th-century Swahili-Arab stone quarter with dark covered walkways, ancient coral mansions, and underground holding cells. Built to protect residents from pirate raids, its narrow alleys and subterranean cellars are famous for ghost stories, phantom footsteps, and eerie whispers.
