Nioumachoua Islet Ruins
The Nioumachoua Islet Ruins, scattered across the uninhabited rocky islets off the southern coast of Mohéli within Mohéli National Park, comprise 18th-century French colonial quarantine structures, lookout posts, and ancient Swahili burial sites. Historically used to isolate ships' crews suffering from tropical fevers during the Indian Ocean spice trade, the secluded islets are shrouded in atmospheric solitude. Today, the overgrown stone ruins are associated with phantom lights, ghostly mariner apparitions, and mysterious echoes across the lagoon.
