Othello Castle
Guarding the harbor walls of Famagusta's medieval old town, Othello Castle—officially known as Famagusta Citadel—was built by the Lusignans in the 14th century and later rebuilt by the Venetians into a powerful artillery fortress. Marked by the stone relief of the Lion of Saint Mark above its gateway, the castle is world-famous as the inspiration for William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello. Beyond its literary fame, the citadel carries a dark history of bloody sieges, secret dungeons, and lingering spectral apparitions.
