    Buffavento Castle

    KyreniaCyprus11th century

Perched at an astonishing elevation of 950 meters above sea level on a sharp jagged mountain peak, Buffavento Castle is the highest and most isolated of Cyprus's three Kyrenia mountain fortresses. Its Italian name translates to Defier of the Winds, reflecting the howling mountain gales that constantly scour its sheer stone ramparts. Built during the Byzantine era as a signal beacon station and prison, this cloud-shrouded ruin is enveloped in legends of a Byzantine princess, miraculous dog cures, and the phantom specter of Queen Regina.

    Kyrenia Castle

    KyreniaCyprus7th century

Guarding the entrance to Kyrenia's historic horseshoe harbor, Kyrenia Castle is a massive fortress whose origins date back to the Byzantine era. Over centuries of turmoil, it was expanded by the Lusignans, heavily fortified by the Venetians with thick round bastions, and utilized as a grim prison by the Ottoman Empire and British colonial administration. Beneath its grand battlements lies a long history of harrowing sieges, royal executions, tortures, and the famous ancient Kyrenia Shipwreck exhibit.

    Saint Hilarion Castle

    KyreniaCyprus11th century

Perched dramatically on a rocky crag in the Kyrenia Mountain range at over 730 meters above sea level, Saint Hilarion Castle is one of Cyprus's most visually striking medieval fortifications. Originally built as a Byzantine monastery in the 10th century and later expanded into a royal summer palace by Lusignan crusader kings, the castle inspired Walt Disney's iconic depiction of Snow White's castle. Beneath its fairy-tale silhouette lies a blood-soaked history of royal intrigue, siege slaughter, and the dark legend of Queen Regina and the infamous Prince John's Tower.
