Mausoleum of Tangun
Dominating the gentle pine-forested slopes of Mount Taebak in Kangdong County, Pyongyang Municipality, the Mausoleum of Tangun (Tangun-rung) is a colossal 22-meter-tall white granite step pyramid constructed in 1994. The monument is dedicated to Dangun Wanggeom, the mythical founder of Gojoseon—the first Korean kingdom established in 2333 BCE. In late 1993, North Korean archaeologists announced the discovery of an ancient stone tomb containing human skeletal remains, dated via electron spin resonance to approximately 5,011 years old, claiming them to be the physical remains of Dangun and his wife. Sprawling across 1.8 square kilometers, the grand complex features massive granite statues of ancient Gojoseon princes and ministers, stone tiger guardians, and a marble burial chamber. Surrounded by sacred Korean origin folklore, visitors and guards report glowing ethereal blue light beams above the pyramid peak, disembodied ancient priest chants during solstices, and intense ancestral energy.
