Nine Dragon Falls and Mount Kumgang

    KosongDemocratic People's Republic of KoreaAncient

Plunging 74 meters down a sheer wall of polished white granite into a crystal-clear emerald basin, Nine Dragon Falls (Kuryong Falls) is celebrated as one of the four legendary waterfalls of Korea. Situated in the heart of Mount Kumgang ('Diamond Mountain') in Kosong County, Kangwon Province, the waterfall is carved into an extraordinary landscape of over 12,000 jagged granite peaks, pine-clad ravines, and deep mountain pools. According to ancient Korean mythology, nine divine dragons (*Kuryong*) inhabited the deep plunge pools beneath the cascade to guard the sacred mountain. Celebrated for millennia in classical Korean poetry, landscape painting, and shamanic tradition, the canyon is steeped in enchanted folklore involving celestial fairies (*Sonnyo*), mountain spirits (*Sanshin*), disembodied female weeping near the cliffs, and phantom blue light displays hovering above the granite precipices.
