Ghoubbet-el-Kharab

Ghoubbet-el-Kharab, known in English as the Devil's Cauldron, is a deep, dark marine bay located at the westernmost tip of the Gulf of Tadjoura. Surrounded by towering volcanic cliffs of pitch-black basalt and connected to the ocean by a narrow, violent channel, the bay is infamous for unpredictable whirlpools and sudden thermal currents. Regional mariners and Afar fishermen have feared these waters for generations, believing that an abyss at the center of the bay harbor giant aquatic demons capable of pulling ships beneath the dark surface.
