Dahlak Kebir Necropolis Ruins
Dahlak Kebir is the largest island in the Dahlak Archipelago off Massawa, home to an ancient Islamic necropolis and over 300 subterranean coral-cut cisterns dating back to the 8th century. Known for its early Kufic carved tombstones and medieval sultans' tombs, the desert island is steeped in maritime lore. Visitors and local fishermen report phantom sailors, disembodied Arabic whispers near ancient cisterns, and mysterious spectral lights.
