Massawa Imperial Palace
The Imperial Palace of Massawa stands as a stark, bomb-shattered monument on Taulud Island overlooking the Red Sea. Originally built in 1872 by Swiss architect Werner Munzinger for Ottoman and Egyptian administrators, it later served as a royal residence for Emperor Haile Selassie during Ethiopian rule. Heavily bombarded during the Eritrean War of Independence in 1990, the skeletal ruin now echoes with haunting sea winds, localized footsteps, and eerie apparitions that draw intrepid dark tourists.
