Citadel of Carcassonne
Perched on a rocky hilltop above the Aude River in southern France, the Citadel of Carcassonne (Cité de Carcassonne) is Europe's largest surviving fortified medieval city. Featuring a double circuit of defensive walls punctuated by 52 massive towers, the UNESCO World Heritage site is steeped in centuries of bloody warfare, Cathar religious persecutions, and Inquisition tortures. The ancient stone streets and subterranean vaults are haunted by phantom Cathar martyrs and the legendary spirit of Dame Carcas.
