Frankenstein Castle
Perched on a high hilltop in the Odenwald mountain range overlooking Darmstadt, Frankenstein Castle is one of Germany’s most famous legendary ruins. Built in the thirteenth century by Lord Conrad II Reiz of Breuberg, the fortress is forever bound to the eccentric alchemist Johann Konrad Dippel, born here in 1673. Rumors of his secret experiments with exhumed corpses, life elixirs, and anatomical dissections passed into regional folklore, ultimately inspiring Mary Shelley’s classic Gothic masterpiece.
