Reichenstein Castle
Overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Reichenstein Castle is a formidable hilltop fortress with a dark medieval history. Built in the early thirteenth century, the castle became an infamous stronghold for robber barons who terrorized Rhine shipping traffic. The execution of the robber knight Dietrich von Hohenfels and his nine sons in 1282 sparked one of the Rhineland’s most gruesome ghost legends.
