Elmina Castle
Erected by the Portuguese in 1482 as Castelo de São Jorge da Mina, Elmina Castle is the oldest European building in existence south of the Sahara. Originally constructed as a trade settlement for gold and timber, the castle quickly turned into a vital node in the transatlantic slave trade. Thousands of enslaved Africans were held in dark, overcrowded underground dungeons before being marched through the harrowing Door of No Return. Today, the castle stands as a solemn UNESCO World Heritage site haunted by deep historical trauma, lingering apparition rumors, and distressing phantom acoustics recorded by visitors from around the world.
