Fort San Sebastian
Built by the Portuguese between 1520 and 1526 as Fort São Sebastião de Xama, Fort San Sebastian is one of the oldest European standing structures in West Africa. Situated on a cliff overlooking the mouth of the Pra River in Shama, the fort was seized by the Dutch West India Company in 1640 and extensively enlarged. Serving as a crucial naval re-provisioning post and slave holding depot, Fort San Sebastian is famous in local lore for ghostly sightings of Anton Wilhelm Amo—Africa's first modern philosopher who lived nearby—as well as phantom footsteps in its dark stone chambers.
