Anavatos, known as the 'Mystras of the Aegean', is a haunting medieval ghost village perched dramatically atop a sheer 300-meter granite cliff on the island of Chios. Built in the Byzantine era for defense against pirates, it became the site of a tragic mass sacrifice during the 1822 Massacre of Chios when women and children threw themselves from the cliff face to escape Ottoman enslavement, leaving the stone ruins haunted by spectral cries.
