Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad
Fort Nuestra Señora de la Soledad (Our Lady of Solitude Fort) stands dramatically atop a steep cliff bluff overlooking Umatac Bay in southern Guam. Constructed by the Spanish in 1810, it was the last and largest of four coastal fortifications built to defend Spanish Manila Galleons resting in Umatac Bay from English pirates, privateers, and foreign warships. Featuring stone ramparts, replica bronze cannons, and a stone guardhouse (garita), Fort Soledad is celebrated across Guam for its breathtaking views and its persistent ghost stories involving spectral Spanish sentries, phantom footsteps along the cliff path, and mysterious phantom lights out at sea.
